What is a backlink analysis tool?
A backlink analysis tool shows which websites link to a site and how good those links are: the linking page, anchor text, link type (dofollow, nofollow, sponsored, ugc) and quality signals such as authority and spam scores.
Most "best tools" lists stop there. The part they miss is that these tools answer two different questions, and you usually need both:
An index tells you a link was there. A live check tells you it is there, followed and on a page Google can index.
| Link index tools | Live backlink checkers | |
|---|---|---|
| Question answered | Which links exist to any site, including competitors? | Do the links in my list work right now? |
| Where the data comes from | The tool's own crawl of the web, stored in an index | Each linking page opened live when you scan |
| How fresh | As of the last crawl of that page | This minute |
| Typical use | Competitor research, finding link opportunities | Checking delivered, bought or reported links |
| Examples | Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz, Majestic | WEB HOST PUNE Backlink Checker |

Best free backlink analysis tools
1. Google Search Console. The Links report lists the top sites linking to your website, the most linked pages and anchor texts, straight from Google. Best for: every website owner, as the starting list. Limits: your own site only, no link type, no quality metrics, and it does not tell you if a listed link has since been removed.
2. WEB HOST PUNE Backlink Checker (free plan). Paste up to 100 linking pages and it opens each one live: is the link there, is it dofollow, nofollow, sponsored or ugc, what anchor and target, and can Google index the page (noindex, X-Robots-Tag, robots.txt, canonical, HTTP status). Best for: verifying the Search Console list, a vendor's report or your own outreach. Limits: it does not discover competitor links; it checks the list you give it.
3. Ahrefs free backlink checker. Enter any domain to see a sample of its top backlinks with Domain Rating. Best for: a quick look at a competitor. Limits: only a sample, and the full data needs a paid plan.
4. Moz Link Explorer (free) and Ubersuggest. A limited number of free lookups with Domain Authority (Moz) or a beginner-friendly overview (Ubersuggest). Best for: occasional checks and learning.
Best paid backlink analysis tools
Ahrefs. One of the largest backlink indexes, with new and lost link tracking, referring domains, link intersect and broken backlink reports. Best for: agencies and SEOs doing competitor research at scale.
Semrush. Backlink analytics, a backlink audit, backlink gap and link building tools inside a full SEO suite with keyword and technical tools. Best for: teams that want one platform for everything.
Moz Pro. Link Explorer with Domain Authority, Page Authority and Spam Score, metrics many agencies use in client reports. Best for: straightforward authority metrics.
Majestic. Focused almost entirely on links, with Trust Flow, Citation Flow and fresh and historic indexes. Best for: link specialists who want link-only data.
All four are discovery tools. They are excellent for finding links, and they still show each link as of their last crawl, not as of today.
Why link counts in different tools never match
Every index crawls a different part of the web at a different speed, so the same domain shows different link counts in every tool. More importantly, links change after they are crawled: pages are deleted, links are removed, nofollow is added, a page gets noindex.
We tested this on ourselves. We exported 650 linking pages from our own Google Search Console and checked each one live:
| Result of the live check | Links | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Still live | 353 | 54% |
| Gone (removed, page deleted or site down) | 150 | 23% |
| Needed a manual look (bot check, login, JavaScript) | 147 | 23% |

How do backlink tool prices compare?
We deliberately do not copy price figures here: every vendor changes plans and prices regularly, and third-party lists already disagree. Compare the pricing model instead, then check the vendor's own pricing page.
| Pricing model | Tools | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Google Search Console | Your own site only |
| Free tier + paid plan | WEB HOST PUNE Backlink Checker, Ubersuggest, Moz | Start free; ours has no auto-renewal and accepts UPI or PayPal |
| Monthly subscription | Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz Pro, Majestic | Priced for daily professional use; annual billing usually cheaper |
| Credits for extra actions | Indexing in our tool, some API plans elsewhere | You pay only for what you send |
Which backlink analysis tool should you choose?
| You are | Start with | Add when you grow |
|---|---|---|
| Website owner | Search Console + free backlink checker | Pro checker for monitoring |
| Business buying links | Free backlink checker on every delivery | Pro for Google index check and re-scans |
| SEO freelancer | Free checker for client proof + a free index tool | One paid index tool + Pro checker |
| SEO agency | Ahrefs or Semrush for research | Pro checker for verified client reports and monitoring |
| Link builder | Majestic or Ahrefs for prospects | Link Opportunities + live verification |
The best backlink analysis workflow in 2026

- Discover: export your links from Search Console, and use an index tool for competitor ideas.
- Verify: run the list through a live backlink checker; keep only links that are live, the right type and indexable.
- Index: check which link pages are already in Google and send only the new, indexable ones (see how to get backlinks indexed).
- Report: export the verified list for your client, buyer or seller.
- Monitor: re-scan monthly to catch lost links and nofollow changes early.

Conclusion
There is no single best backlink analysis tool, because there are two jobs. Use an index tool to discover links and opportunities, and a live backlink checker to prove which links really work before you report them, pay for them or send them for indexing. Start with the free options, verify what you have, and upgrade only for the job you need more of.
