Why Linux, specifically
The "Linux" in Linux shared hosting refers to the server's operating system, and for the vast majority of business websites, it's the right default — not because Windows hosting is worse, but because most website software (WordPress especially, along with the broader PHP/MySQL stack most sites run on) was built with Linux servers as the primary target. That means better compatibility, generally lower cost, and a more mature, well-tested environment for the exact kind of site most businesses need.
Windows hosting exists for a specific reason: sites that genuinely depend on .NET or MSSQL. If that's not your situation, Linux shared hosting is the more proven, cost-effective starting point, and it's where we start most new hosting clients unless there's a specific reason not to.
What "fully managed" actually covers
A lot of budget hosting is technically cheap but effectively unmanaged — you get server access and you're expected to handle security patches, backups, and troubleshooting yourself. That's a reasonable trade for a developer who wants full control; it's a poor fit for a business owner who wants a website that stays online without becoming a technical responsibility.
