In depth: Domain Registration
Why the domain decision is worth five extra minutes of thought
A domain name is one of the few things about a website that's genuinely hard to change later without cost — once it's printed on signage, shared on business cards, and indexed by search engines, switching to a different one means losing all of that accumulated recognition and starting over. That's the actual reason it's worth getting right early, more than any technical concern.
The most common mistake isn't picking a bad name — it's picking a domain that isn't actually registered in the business's own name, on an account the business owner can't access later. We've seen this cause real problems: a domain registered years ago by a previous web developer, on that developer's own account, with the business unable to renew or transfer it when the relationship ended. We register domains directly under your ownership, with your access — not locked to us.
.com, .in, or something else?
For most Indian businesses, this comes down to two realistic choices, and the right one depends on your audience more than any technical factor:
If your ideal .com is taken, registering a slightly different name that's actually available often serves a business better than settling for a less-recognized extension just to keep the exact wording.
| Extension | Best fit |
|---|---|
| .com | Universally recognized, the default expectation for most visitors, especially if you have or expect customers outside India. |
| .in | A strong, clearly India-focused signal — a solid choice if your business is specifically local/national in focus. |
| .co.in / .net.in | Reasonable fallbacks if your preferred .com or .in is already taken, though generally a weaker first choice. |
And then there's renewal — a genuinely common, entirely avoidable failure mode. Domains expire on a fixed annual cycle, and if a renewal notice goes to an old email address or simply gets missed, a business can lose its domain outright, sometimes to someone else registering it the moment it lapses. We manage renewal reminders specifically to prevent this.
