What is the difference between a brand mention and a backlink?
| Backlink | Brand mention | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A clickable link from another site to yours | Your brand named on another site, linked or not |
| Main effect | Authority and crawling for Google rankings | Recognition by people, Google and AI tools |
| Can be counted by | Link reports, Search Console links report | Brand monitoring, AI visibility tools |
| Main risk | Paid or spammy links break Google policy | Wrong or outdated descriptions of your brand |
| Best case | Relevant, followed, indexed | Positive, accurate, in a trusted source |
Do brand mentions matter more than backlinks for AI search?
For AI answers, mentions look very important. Large language models learn about brands from text, and AI search tools retrieve pages that discuss a topic, whether or not they link anywhere. In an analysis of about 75,000 brands, Ahrefs found branded web mentions correlated with visibility in Google's AI Overviews about three times more strongly than backlinks.
Two cautions. First, this is correlation: well-known brands get more mentions, more links and more AI visibility at the same time. Second, Google has never confirmed that unlinked mentions count as links in its ranking systems. Treat mentions as an AI and brand signal, not as a replacement for links.
Links help Google trust your pages. Mentions help AI understand your brand. You want both.
Do backlinks still matter for Google in 2026?
Yes. Google describes links as one of the ways it discovers pages and judges their relevance, and its spam policies would not need a whole section on link spam if links no longer mattered. What changed is that a pile of weak links matters less and a few strong, relevant links matter more, especially if those pages are actually indexed. (Our guide on getting backlinks indexed covers that part.)
Where do AI tools find brand mentions?
- Industry articles and roundups ("best tools for", "top agencies in").
- Communities such as Reddit and forums; see Reddit and community links.
- Review sites and directories with real reviews.
- News and local press, podcasts and interview pages.
- Your own consistent profiles: the same name, description and links everywhere.
How to earn mentions and backlinks together
- Publish something worth citing: original numbers, a checklist, a free tool. We publish our own recheck of 650 backlinks for exactly this reason.
- Pitch topics, not links. Offer an expert quote or data to writers covering your field; links follow good material.
- Use one brand name consistently, plus a one-line description people can copy.
- Turn unlinked mentions into links politely: thank the author and suggest the most useful page to link.
- Collect reviews from real customers on the platforms your buyers read.
- Check every link that comes with a mention: live, right target, followed or sponsored as agreed, page indexable.
How do I measure AI visibility?
Start simple. Make a list of ten questions your customers ask, ask them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google every month, and note whether your brand appears and how it is described. Paid AI visibility tools automate this at scale.
On the link side, keep one list of your backlinks and re-check it regularly with a backlink checker. The combination tells you whether you are being mentioned, linked and trusted.
Putting it together

Conclusion
The question is not mentions or backlinks. It is whether trusted sources talk about you, link to you, and get it right. Earn placements that do all three, verify the links, and your brand gets stronger in Google and in AI answers at the same time.
